FOCCUS, ever mindful of its mission, notes April 26 as the 24th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster --- the largest nuclear disaster the world has ever known.

In Remembrance…

  • Of the Chernobyl tragedy on April 26, 1986
  • Of the hundreds of firefighters (“liquidators”) who gave their lives
  • Of the hundreds of thousands who continue to suffer from adverse health effects due to radiation exposure and contamination
  • Of the millions of people of all ages whose lives have been drastically changed

 In Honor…

  • Of those thousands still working to control and repair the damage
  • Of those millions of people attempting to rebuild their lives and the lives of their children

With thanks…

  • For dedicated people determined to build hope in affected areas
  • For international organizations continuing to provide knowledge, funds, and personal support to Chernobyl victims

With hope for the future

  • For new knowledge and new solutions
  • New safeguards
  • New opportunities for building meaningful lives

FOCCUS is Sponsoring “After Chernobyl” Photo Exhibit by Michael Forster Rothbart  – Madison Municipal Building ARTspace gallery, 215 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. If you lived near Chernobyl, would you stay? These photos show what it's like in this contaminated zone of Ukraine - and how people there cope. Sponsored by Friends of Chernobyl Centers, U.S. The exhibit will be showing until October 30, 2009.
