FOCCUS 2011 Grants to Centers

By Robert Schuettpelz, FOCCUS Executive Director

A recent trip to Ukraine highlighted the importance of the Grants that FOCCUS provides to the Centers each year. While our grants our quite small at $2,000 per Center, this money goes a long way in Ukraine and these projects often lead to continued funding from other sources.

As I spent time at each of the Centers this past April, it was really incredible to see the success of these projects and meet some of the individuals who took part in them. Here are just a couple examples of how these programs made an impact on people:

"The Your Life, Your Choice study course really helped me in the sense that I learned a lot about AIDS, STDs and drugs, about risky situations, and when one has to be able to say "no". All of us learned something new in this course, something that will be useful in life. Thank you!"

-Irina K., 16 from Borodyanka

"We believe that it will result in changing our society's notion of old age; older people will be perceived not as helpless victims, but as individuals who make an important contribution to the society's development, and to the community of Slavutich."

-With gratitude, participants of the project "Life Just Starts After 60"

We will again be funding a project at each of the 5 Centers in 2011. This year's project proposals include teaching healthy lifestyles, youth leadership, career development, and community participation for the elderly.

To make these vital programs real we need your support. FOCCUS' goal this year is to provide $2,000 to each of the 5 Chernobyl Centers. The math is easy - $10,000 is needed to fund five programs in 2011.
